How to Dress Well in University – Feminine Style

School’s back and it’s time to put on your thinking hat regarding your studies and also your wardrobe. I always shout this from the mountains, but how you dress is important and I am of the belief that is a woman’s duty to dress well and femininely. A feminine wardrobe should consist mainly of dresses and skirts. As a young girl going to university or resuming your studies there, you’re going to be faced with a strong uniformity of style amongst your fellow alumni. Some may say that most are just not thinking about what they wear to university but this is false, as there is a strong conscious on what the moda operandi is and I talk about what that is further on.

I went to a university campus recently and honestly it was very difficult to determine whether an individual was a male or female. The dress code it seems today is y2k grunge. The typical outfit consists of baggy trousers (ideally combat style), a hoodie, doc martens, 70s rock haircut, and colour scheme: dark. Do most of the young students want to dress like this? Perhaps. Or are they subconsciously joining the bandwagon in order to fit in and make friends. I certainly think the latter. The pressure is real, but by breaking away from the mould you are actually setting a great example to others on what it means to be independent, confident and strong-minded.

I just read on the Gymshark website a post on what to wear at university and this is what they wrote:

There’s no official dress code when it comes to college. But there is one general rule of thumb, and that’s to keep things casual: think jeans, leggings, sweatpants, jersey shirts, oversized tees, crop tops, hoodies, and flannel shirts for your casual college outfits.

Clearly that is the dress code! But is it befitting a young girl who should grow up into a fine young woman ready to go out into the real world. I think not. What it does it continues to maintain the juvenile sentiment in the young students because they are not training themselves to be well dressed, even at university.

Back in the day

Up until the 1960s, young girls and boys dressed smart to university. There was a clear distinction of the sexes – the boys dressed masculine and the girls dressed femininely. Just as orderly and beautiful their university campus was, they too dressed well and appropriately. Recently, Vogue magazine published a lovely set of images captured by Nadine Ijewere to pay homage to Historically Black Campus Universities (HCBUs). The models were dressed finely for the university setting, and although set in the 1950s, it captured a time in history when dressing well was still valued.

London Universities

When compared to other universities in the UK, London comes at number one for having the best dressed students. Students in the capital city tend to dress more smarter. This is what is so interesting about the subconscious mind. Inner London is a more affluent area, where people rub shoulders with others from all walk of life. You see adults dressed immaculately for their various places of work. People parade the streets of the city of London dressed well because they want to fit in with the environment. Everyone knows that there’s a benefit that comes with dressing well – because of how you will be perceived. This confirms that idea that dressing well is important and changes the way you feel about yourself.

Feminine university outfits style inspiration

I’ve compiled some images for your inspiration for what to wear to university. Most girls today wear trousers majority of the time at university but if you want to be more feminine, then I would encourage you to wear more skirts and dresses. Making the change may seem difficult but seeking inspiration might just prove how easy it is to put on a feminine outfit.

Wear what you have in your wardrobe

I am not saying that you have to fork out money to buy a new wardrobe. But if you don’t have feminine pieces of clothing, sell what you have and buy some new clothes – that way you’re not continually hoarding items. Vinted or Depop and both great places to sell things. And to those that have nice items of clothing already, wear it! Don’t wait for 2-3 times in the year to wear them; if they’re suitable for university then just wear it. I remember when I started dressing more femininely at university and most times when I would wear a skirt or dress my friends would ask me if I was going somewhere! Wearing skirt or dress as a woman should be the default item of clothing you wear in my opinion.
